Cocciaretto In Decent Form

World no. 54 Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be playing in the first tournament since her opening round defeat to Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open.

While she hasn’t played in over a month, she will be looking to return to action win a win. The Italian was off to a brilliant start in January, reaching her maiden WTA final in just her second tournament of the season.

Cocciaretto lost her season opener to Anna Blinkova in Auckland. However, she found form in Hobart, defeating Alize Cornet, Jasmine Paolini, Bernarda Pera and Sofia Kenin respectively to reach her first ever WTA final. BUt a title remained elusive as she went down to Lauren Davis in the final.

Overall Cocciaretto brings a 4-3 record to Merida.

While the 22-year-old has found more success on clay, she has been making an impact on hard courts recently. She ended 2022 by winning her first ever WTA Challenger title and that came on hard courts in Abierto Tampico, Mexico.

Can she make an impressive start in Merida?

Golubic on a Four-Match Losing Straek

Facing the Italian in the first round will be world no. 88 Viktorija Golubic. The Swiss is 0-3 at the tour level this year and currently on a four-match losing streak in singles.

The 30-year-old won both her qualifying round matches at the Adelaide International 1, but hasn’t been able to win a single match since then. She was beaten by Sorana Cirstea in the first round in Adealide, then Baindl Kateryna Baindl ousted her in three sets in Hobart qualifier.

Golubic went down to Petra Martic next in the opening round of the Australian Open and then Danka Kovinic sent her packing in the first round in Lyon.

The former no. 35 had a 31-25 record across levels last year, but she reached just one final and that was in the WTA 125 tournament in Rouen, France.

At the tour level, she reached just one semifinal finish in addition to a couple of quarterfinal finishes.

Having not got off to a great start this year, will fortunes change for her in Merida?

Cocciaretto v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Cocciaretto has displayed better form this year, while Golubic has struggled. Expect the Italian to get her campaign off on a winning note.
