Lehecka Off to a Great Start

Jiri Lehecka is off to an 8-3 start on the tour and 10-3 overall. The Czech, who was a runner-up at the ATP Next Gen Finals last year, reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open this year.

The 21-year-old defeated Borna Coric, Christopher Eubanks, Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime respectively to reach the last eight at the Melbourne major, but his promising run ended with a straight sets defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Lehecka had made his Grand Slam debut last season, but was defeated in the opening round of all the four majors.

Lehecka made an early impact this season, beating Alexander Zverev at the United Cup, where he finished with a 1-1 record. He then qualified for Auckland and won the first round match against Thiago Monteiro but went down to Norrie in round 2. That was followed by the unexpected run in Melbourne.

He was last seen in the Davis Cup in the first week of February, where he won both his singles matches against Portugal.

Lehecka had peaked to a career-high ranking of no. 37 earlier this month, but has fallen 15 places since then. He will be hoping to impress on his Doha debut and regain a few places in the rankings.

Damir Dzumhur made it to the main draw with a straight sets win over Finland’s Otto Virtanen on Sunday.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina player saved 7 of 8 break points and converted 3 of 8 to beat the world no. 174 6-3, 7-5 and qualify for the main event. While the second qualifying round needed just two sets, he had needed three sets to beat Italy’s Francesco Passaro 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).

Ranked no. 213th in the world, the 30-year-old will be playing his first match on the tour on Tuesday. He has been in good touch at the lower level tournaments and brings an overall season record of 8-5 into the main draw in Qatar.

Prior to the Qatar Open, Dzumhur featured in the semifinals of the Vilnius-2 Challenger. He was also a quarterfinalist at the Noumea Challenger.

A former no. 23, Dzhumur is a three-time champion on the tour. He will be making his third appearance in Doha and his best was a Round of 16 finish in 2016.
