Victoria Azarenka v Amanda Anisimova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting was at the Madrid Open of 2022 and Anisimova had won that match on clay.

Azarenka was coming into this tournament with a second round exit at the Qatar Open where she had gone down fighting to Belinda Bencic. Here, she was drawn to face the woefully out of sorts Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and was expected to run through her Russian opponent.
As it turned out Pavlyuchenkova pushed Azarenka, nearly into the fifth set before the world number 14 came through in straight sets in the end.
Azarenka, who was also broken three times in the match, did not serve as well as she would have liked but still won 6-3, 7-5 having frittered away a golden chance to serve it out at 5-4 in the second set.

Zvonareva No Match for Anisimova
This was Anisimova’s first match she was knocked out of the Australian Open in the very first round last month. Having ended the previous season with some solid performances, Anisimova hadn’t had too many results go her way this year and needed something stronger in this tournament.
She has started off well here, defeating Vera Zvonareva in her opener with relative ease.
The American, who has fallen to 35th in the world from her career-best ranking of 21, won just her third match of the season 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 11 minutes to march into the second round.
Anisismova faced no break-points in the match, whilst getting the better of her opponent’s serve three times to ease back into competitive tennis after her 34 day break from it.
The competition gets more ruthless now but Anisimova would be warmed up coming into this one.
