First Outing for Siniakova Since Melbourne

Katerina Siniakova will be playing for the first time since a first-round defeat at the Australian Open to Coco Gauff.

Prior to that, she reached the Round of 16 in Adelaide where she lost to Carolina Garcia in three sets – her best result this season.

But that is as far as singles action is concerned. Siniakova continues to dominate the doubles circuit, having captured two titles last month, including her second Australian Open alongside countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova. The pair have now won seven Grand Slams together, and have forged a 24-match winning streak at Majors as a duo.

The No. 1 doubles player will not be joining forces with Krejcikova this week as both players concertante in fine-tuning their games for the Sunshine Double, with Krejcikova making a stop in the Middle East.

Siniakov has done remarkably well to nail a top 50 ranking in singles at the start of 2023. Last year she sensationally defeated Elena Rybakina in Portoroz to capture her first singles title in five years.

Tsurenko Scales Qualifying Hurdle

Lesia Tsurenko, meanwhile, played two qualifying matches in Merida to reach the main draw. Her opener against Caroline Dolehide was straightforward, winning 6-4 6-2.

But Tsurenko faced stiff competition from Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini. After the pair split the first two sets, Stefanini twice broke Tsurenko’s serve in the decider and even served for the match 5-4, but the Ukrainian used her experience and broke a nervous Stefanini to level at 5-all.

Mentally, the Italian checked out, and she was broken in her next service game too, to hand Tsurenko a spot in Monday’s draw. It’s been a welcome return to form for Tsurenko who has since touched the WTA’s Top 100 again.

At the start of February, she reached her first WTA final since 2019 in Hua Hin, losing to the in-form Zhu Lin.

Siniakova v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

This is a tough one to call, but Tsurenko has found her rhythm of late. Her fitness is also a major improvement this year. As long as she is healthy she has a puncher’s chance of winning main draw matches.
