Kwon Won His Second ATP Title in January

World no. 68 Soon-woo Kwon has had a very good start to 2023. The South Korean couldn’t win both his qualifiers in Adelaide-2 yet he made it to the main draw as a lucky loser and made the most of the opportunity, going all the way to lift the ATP 250 title.

He now has two ATP titles to his name having also won in Astana in 2021. His stunning show in Adelaide included wins over Pablo Carreno Busta in the round of 16, Jack Draper in a thrilling three-set semifinal and Roberto Bautista Agut in an equally dramatic three-set final.

Kwon was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open by Christopher Eubanks and he also lost his opening round match in Rotterdam to Alexander Zverev. Kwon is 9-5 from all competitions this year and will look to improve that record on Tuesday.

Shelbayh to Make His Tour Debut

Jordan’s Abedallah Shelbayh has been rewarded for his consistency at the lower level tournaments. The 19-year-old will be making his ATP tour debut in the first round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday.

Shelbayh is 16-5 so far this year and had finished 2022 with a 28-8 run.

Last season also saw Shelbayh pick his first three titles, although all those triumphs came at the ITF level. This year, too, Shelbayh has already featured in two finals. One of them was at the ITF level, while the other was his first Challenger final. He could not win the title in Manama though, going down to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the title clash.

The left-hander’s run to the final in Manama, included wins over Jason Kubler and Slavatore Caruso. As a result of his stellar show in Manama, Shelbayh jumped 123 placed to his career-high ranking of no. 276 this week

Can he continue to impress with a win on his tour debut on Tuesday?

Kwon v Shelbayh Prediction and Tip

Kwon is the more experienced of the two. He has also displayed good form this season and will look to begin his Doha campaign with a win.
