Basilashvili Out of the Top 100

Doha has been a happy hunting venue for Nikoloz Basilashvili. He has been particularly good in the tournament over the last two years. While he won the title by beating Roberto Bautista Agut in the final in 2021, he lost to the same opponent in the title cash last year.

Overall the Georgian is 12-4 at the Qatar Open, having also made it to the quarterfinals in 2018.

The 30-year-old almost missed a place in the main draw this year after losing to Liam Broady in straight sets in the second qualifier on Sunday. However, he was fortunate to get a spot as a lucky loser. Now he will be looking to grab the opportunity with both hands.

Doha has been a place where he has delivered even when he has struggled to perform in other tournaments. Last year, Basilashvili had a 14-29 record on the tour but was a finalist in Doha.

This year, he doesn’t have an encouraging record either, having won just one of his four main draw matches. If one were to include the qualifiers, he is 3-6 so far in 2023.

Basilashvili, who was a top 20 player this time last year, saw a constant decline in his game, as a result of which he has slipped out of the top 100. Currently ranked no. 113, the five-time tour-level winner will be hoping for change of fortunes in Doha.

Muller Rebounds Twice to Qualify

For two straight matches, Alexandre Muller bounced back from a set down to win his qualifying round matches and advance to the main draw in Qatar.

This will be his first tour-level match of the season.

In the qualifying rounds, the 26-year-old first defeated China’s Zhang Zhizhen 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 on Saturday and then accounted for Tomas Machac in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The Czech player had taken the first set and had a match point in the second set tiebreak but a determined Muller fought hard. He saved the match point, won the second set and then raced to a 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory in the final set.

Ranked no. 170 in the world, Muller is 10-6 this year, playing entirely in lower level tournaments. His best so far in 2023 is a quarterfinal finish in Koblenz Challenger. Can he carry his qualifying round form into the main draw?

Basilashvili v Muller Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili loves playing here. He has made it to the final in both the last two seasons. That experience should come in handy in the opener. Expect the vastly experienced Georgian to begin with a win.
