Kimberly Birrell v Wang Xiyu Head to Head

No previous meetings have happened at the highest level between these two. They faced off in 2018 on the ITF circuit and Xiyu had won that one.

Birrell Blows Bondar Away

She is a qualifier in this event but Birrell was always a favourite coming into her first round match against Anna Bondar and that’s exactly how she played.

The Aussie, who is ranked 57 places behind Bondar, might have been stretched to the distance in the first set but once she had overcome that she carved out an easy win.

Birrell was on court for an hour and 51 minutes to clinch it 7-6 (8), 6-1. In the process she saved a set-point in the opening set, while frittering away two of them before clinching the set off the third.

Interestingly this was just her second main draw win of the season having earlier stunned Kaia Kanepi in the first round of the Australian Open. Can she make it two in two against a struggling 21-year-old opponent?

Xiyu Finally Wins a Match

Coming into her first round match against Alison Riske, Xiyu had participated in three tournaments and lost in the first round at each one of them.

She had retired from her Auckland Open opener against Karolina Muchova, lost to Karolina Pliskova at the season’s first major in Melbourne and then fallen to Lin Zhu in the Hua Hin Open.

Which is why she was a second-favourite against Riske, starting out at 11/10 odds to win it. And win it she did but not before the players had duelled for three hours and 24 minutes in a three-setter that went the distance.

In the interim, Riske had two match-points on her own serve in the final set at 5-4 but Xiyu managed to break back and grab the match in the following tie-breaker.

Xiyu will be relieved with the win but can she now make it two in two despite her recent form issues?

Birrell v Xiyu Prediction and Tip

While Xiyu has struggled with form we believe it was more to do with her fitness and the resulting confidence issues. Now that she has come through from being down a couple of match-points, Xiyu becomes a dangerous player and will be our pick to win this one.
