Cameron Norrie v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it came at the 2020 Auckland Open. Monteiro had won that in straight sets.

Norrie Overcomes Slow Start against Cerundolo

It wasn’t the easiest of opening encounters but Norrie managed to carve out a straight-set win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo to move to the second round.

Coming off a final appearance at the Argentina Open, Norrie defeated Cerundolo 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and a half to continue to show his improvement on clay.

Norrie did not make the brightest of starts though as he fell 3-1 behind and failed to break hi opponent’s serve till the ninth game. It was when the Argentine served for the first set that Norrie finally looked to have woken up from his slumber and broke back.

Another break followed soon after, allowing Norrie to grab the set.

With Cerundolo’s morale broken, Norrie gained a lot more confidence in the second set especially after he saved three break-points in the very first game. Two breaks in Norrie’s favour followed as he completed the win.

Things could get slightly more challenging now against the home boy and crowd favourite Monteiro.

Monteiro Sends Thiem Out

Coming into this tournament on the back of four successive losses, not too many were backing Monteiro to get past Dominic Thiem. Bookmakers had pegged a Monteiro win at 9/5 a far cry from Thiem’s 9/20.

As it turned out, Monteiro found himself grow in confidence as the match went along and even when he lost the second set and faced break-points in each of his first two service games, it looked like he was in control.

Monteiro saved all four of those break-points in the decider before pushing it into a tie-breaker which he won easily, clinching the two hours, 46 minutes encounter 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2).

This was also Monteiro’s first main draw win on the ATP circuit for the season. Can he make it two in two?

Norrie v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Other than exhaustion, it’s difficult to see a reason for Norrie to not win this on a canter. Expecting the Brit to come through in straight sets.
