Caty McNally v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head

McNally leads Birrell 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning that match in a qualifying round of the Surbiton ITF in 2019.

McNally Imperious In Dismissing Volynets

Caty McNally’s decision to focus more on her singles career is paying dividends. Although she is playing on both fronts this week at the Merida Open, she hadn’t played any doubles this year prior to this week.

McNally joined the winner’s circle at the end of last season when she took home the WTA 125K title in Midland. She probably needed a longer resting period considering her season finished in early November, which is why she struggled Down Under, losing her first round in Auckland and the second round of the Australian Open.

But she has been in good touch in Merida, defeating in-form Zhu Lin in three sets and then backing up that result with her best performance of the season in beating countrywoman Katie Volynets.

McNally converted seven of her 13 break points, although her first serve will need to improve markedly against a quick returner like Birrell. The American tallied just 56% first-serve points won and the same figure behind her second serve en route to a 6-3 6-0 win.

Birrell Continues Great Run

Despite sitting over 60 spots below Xiyu Wang in the rankings, Australia’s Kimberly Birrell played the better tennis against the World No. 62 to win 6-3 6-2 and book her spot in the quarterfinal of the Merida Open.

It’s the first time Birrell has been to the last eight in a Tour level tournament, and this run is hot on the heels of an ITF title win in Orlando over a week ago.

Birrell has since won six of her seven matches on Mexican soil, a run that includes a quarterfinal finish in Irapuato last week, and now a maiden quarterfinal at WTA level.

Birrell defeated Wang by winning the longer rallies. And the Chinese youngster committed eight costly double faults. From 11 break points, Birrell converted five to polish up a dominant and deserved win.

McNally v Birrell Prediction and Tip

McNally has found her rhythm in both singles and doubles this week. Birrell, meanwhile, is steadily fulfilling her potential, almost four years since she burst onto the scene.

The Aussie has been the more comfortable player on serve, although it could be argued she hasn’t faced a quality returner just yet. It’s a tough one to call from a result perspective, but McNally is probably better placed to handle the nerves in pressure moments having been to this stage before.
