Elise Mertens v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Head to Head

Mertens has won both their previous meetings. The first of those wins came in the first round of the French Open last year, while the second win came in the third qualifying round in Doha this year.

Mertens Knocks Out Shnaider

World no,. 42 Elise Mertens made a solid start with a straight sets win over Diana Shnaider.

The 27-year-old Belgian bagelled the Russian in the first set and then broke the world no. 94 in the very first game of the second set as well.

Mertens won eight consecutive games in the match before Scnaider finally got on board. The vastly experienced Belgian wasn’t broken by the 18-year-old though as she completed a 6-0, 6-4 victory in 70 minutes.

The fourth seed Mertens served seven aces in the match. She won 91% points on the back of her first delivery and saved both the break points that she faced in the match. She had 5 chances to break Shnaider’s serve and she. capitalised on four of those oportunities.

With the win, Mertens is now 8-5 overall this season. She hasn’t done too well in the main draws yet, but the seven-time tour-level champion will hope to reach her first quarterfinal of 2023 with a win on Thursday.

Mertens’ best performance so far was a third round finish at the Australian Open. Can she win consecutive main draw matches for the first time since that run in Melbourne?

Ruse Stuns Giorgi

There were huge expectations from Camila Giorgi to deliver in Monterrey, specially after she triumphed in Merida last week, but the Italian could not go past the first round as she was stunned by qualifier Elena-Gabriela
Ruse.

The world no. 160, who had rallied from a set down to beat SimonaWaltert and Jesika Malečková in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively, needed just two sets to beat the world no. 46 in the first round.

Ruse saved 6 of 10 break points and converted half of the 12 that she held to win the one hour and 51 minute contest 6-4, 7-5.  Thanks to the three wins (which includes qualifiers) so far in Monterrey, Ruse improved to 11-5 in 2023.

This is only the second main draw match on the tour that that Ruse has won this year. She had earlier won her opening round match in Auckland before going down in the round of 16.

Can Ruse win back-to-back main draw matches for the first time since Chicago in 2021?

Mertens v Gabriela Ruse Prediction and Tip

A top 50 player, Mertens is the more experienced of the two and has been a consistent performer over the years. She is expected to win this contest and advance to the quarterfinals.
