Cocciaretto Holds Off Bassols Ribera

World no. 49 Elisabetta Cocciaretto held off a stiff challenge from Spanish alternate Marina Bassols Ribera in the first round.

Cocciaretto, who has been impressive this season, needed an hour and 40 minutes to beat the world no. 124, 7-5, 6-2.

Broken thrice in the match, Cocciaretto converted half of the 12 break points she held to move into the second round.

Now the Italian is one away from reaching back-to-back quarterfinals. Last week, she had reached the last eight in Merida, but couldn’t go beyond that stage.

Cocciaretto’s best this year came in Hobart, where she reached a maiden WTA final only to fall to Lauren Davis in the title clash. Overall, the 22-year-old is 7-4 so far in 2023 and seems to be getting ready to accumulate more wins and make a move up the rankings.

She had peaked to a career-high of 48 in January and is currently sitting on no. 49. A deep run in Monterrey may take her to new heights.

Maria Demolishes Bronzetti

Tatjana Maria was off to a brisk start as she bundled out Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets

The German, ranked no. 73rd in the world, needed just 64 minutes to beat Bronzetti 6-1, 6-0. Maria served 8 aces in the match, won 88% points on the back of her first serve and converted 5 of  7 break points to oust the world no. 68.

Thanks to the win the 35-year-old German improved to 10-6 in 2023 from all her matches. She clinched the ITF Pune title earlier this season, while her best on the tour was a quarterfinal finish in Hua Hin.

A surprise semifinalist in Wimbledon last year, Maria is a two-time champion on the tour. While her first title came on grass in 2018, she won the second of the career and the only one of 2022 in Copa Colsanitas.

Having got off to a dominant start in Monterrey Maria will be looking to get another win on Thursday and reach a second tour-level quarterfinal of the year.

Cocciaretto v Maria Prediction and Tip

Cocciaretto has been in tremendous form this season and despite Maria’s solid opening round display, the Italian will be the favourite in this contest.
