Daria Kasatkina played really strong tennis last year but she’s yet to hit that level this year.r It’s been far away from anything like that as her record is only 4-6. She’s a decent player but she failed to build on her solid start in Adelaide earlier this year.
She defeated players Barbora Krejcikova, Petra Kvitova and Paula Badosa at the start of the season but since then her form has been dropping with every event. Her only wins come over players that are not playing well but perhaps this short break gave her a chance to make a reset.
This type of court is exactly the type of court that fits her tennis. She’s pretty nifty around the court and has an incredible ability to hit winners from very defensive positions. She’s also very skilled at getting many balls back so you need to attack her to win points against her.
With the slower court and higher bounce, it will be very hard for anybody to defeat her but it’s dependent on how well she actually plays. Lately, it’s not been that good.

Solid Level From Maria in R1
Unlike Kasatkina who had a bye in the first round, Tatjana Maria needed to earn her place in the second round. It was a very strong performance beating a very aggressive player in Paolini. It made sense, Maria is a defensive player who has a chance to win these kinds of matchups in Indian Wells.
The court allows you to play defensively and wait for your chance but it will be tricky against Kasatkina. They play a very similar style but neither is really inclined to pick up the aggression but Maria seems to be more likely to do so. She has the better serve out of the two which could be a crucial thing.
She’s also played more solid tennis this year with an 11-7 record but her previous outings in Indian Wells didn’t go so well. A lot will come down to whether she will be able to finish off points against Kasatkina.
As the older player, she really would not like to play a lot of long rallies but it seems very likely. Tough to call but she will have a chance to win. A small one but still a chance.

Kasatkina is the more talented player overall and she should win. Whether she will actually produce a good enough level to do so remains to be seen.
