Tommy Paul v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

Paul won their only meeting at the Australian Open this year. The up-and-down second-round affair saw the American register a win in five sets.

Tommy Paul bounced back from a set down to beat Marc-Andrea Huesler in a three-set second round contest on Friday and move into the round of 32 for the second time in Miami.

The world no. 19 is having an excellent 2023 and he continued his good run on Friday, serving 12 aces and striking 29 winners to score a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

While the Swiss player got the solitary break of the first set, Paul got the only break of the second to tie the match at one-set apiece. In the final set, Paul went a break up early, but Huesler immediately responded with a break to tie the set at 2-2; however, a a second break for the 25-year-old American last in the set proved to be decisive.

Following the win, Paul improved his season record to 15-5. He had reached a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open this year and also reached a second career final in Acapulco, but he could not add to his 2021 Stockholm Open title, as he went down to Alex de Minaur in the title clash.

Paul also made it to the fourth round in Indian Wells. He is in the third round in Miami for the second time. Last year, he bowed out at this stage. Can he reach the round of 16 this year?

Davidovich Fokina Ousts Nakashima

No. 20 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knocked out Brandon Nakashima in straight sets on Friday to register his first-ever main draw win in Miami.

The Spaniard, who featured in the quarterfinals in Indian Wells, needed an hour and 55 minutes to beat the American 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The world no. 20 saved 5 of 6 break points in the match and converted 2 of 7. Nakashima put up some stern resistance throughout the contest, but the Spaniard held off the challenge from the world no. 45 and advanced to the round fo 32.

With the win Davidovich Fokina improved his season record to 11-7. The 23-year-old has featured in three quarterfinals this year, in Adelaide-2, Doha and most recently in Indian Wells.

Last year, he had lost in the first round of his Miami debut, but this year he is off to a god start. Can he keep the form going?

Paul is playing well this season and he has better numbers than the Spaniard. He also edged out Davidovich Fokina in their only meeting at the Australian Open this year. Expect Davidovich Fokina to be competitive again, but Paul is expected to advance.
