Dan Evans v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both came in 2021 with Evans winning the two.

Evans Form Plummeting

It’s been a below-average start to the season for Evans and he will now need to contend with looking to turn that around on his least favourite surface.

The Brit who hasn’t quite fallen on the ATP Rankings yet, will know he has a lot of work to do as he looks to overcome his abysmal performances so far.

Evans has won just three matches the whole year and none since his second round victory over Jeremy Chardy at the Australian Open. He is on a six-match losing streak since then, having even gone down to 231st-ranked Nicolas Mejia in the Davis Cup.

Emil Ruusuvuori, Borna Coric, Jack Draper and Lorenzo Sonego have all gotten the better of Evans.

And with his 14-26 career win-loss record on clay, his results might not be getting sorted any time soon.

Popyrin Has No Trouble against Laaroussi

Younes Lalami Laaroussi is ranked outside the top 800 and had a wildcard to feature in his home competition. And while he was no pushover, Popyrin still did not need more than 72 minutes to get past the Moroccan player in the first round.

Popyrin won 6-3, 6-2 after facing one break-point which came in the first set. His serve was broken but it came after he had raced off to a 5-2 lead and got the better of Laaroussi’s serve in the very next game to wrap up the set.

In the second set, Popyrin raced away to a 3-0 lead and then grabbed the match with a second break in the eighth game.

More vitally, this was just Popyrin’s six tour-level main draw win on clay having lost 10 matches. Can he now overcome the struggling Evans in this encounter?

Evans v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

It’s surprising to see Evans starting out a mere 10/11 in this one. One would have thought him to be longer odds to win on clay after the kind of start he has had to the season. Backing Popyrin for the win here.
