Alexandrova Coming off a Miami Quarterfinal Appearance

A semifinalist at the Charleston Open last season, Alexandrova will hope she can do something similar this year too as she looks to continue her resurrection of this season.

The Russian hadn’t had the best of starts to the year with a third round appearance at the Australian Open remaining her top performance from the first six tournaments she featured in.

A second round, straight-set loss at the Indian Wells Open at the hands of Xinyu Wang would have been rather shocking but Alexandrova looked to have turned things around in Miami.

She overcame Taylor Townsend, Belinda Bencic and Bianca Andreescu to make it to the quarterfinal at the Miami Open where the eventual winner Petra Kvitova got the better of her.

Last year, Alexandrova had followed up her semifinal appearance here with another one at the Madrid Open despite starting out as a qualifier. There are two ways of looking at it – she can find her way on a clay court for sure, but she would also know she needs these results to go her way if she wants to defend all those points from 2022.

Putintseva Scrapes Past the Returning Svitolina

Elina Svitolina hadn’t played a competitive match in over a year and she returned to almost shock Putintseva in the first round of the competition.

Putintseva needed to come back from being a set down before winning 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 in a match lasting two hours and 48 minutes.

What was interesting to see was the unusually high number of break-points that Putintseva had in the encounter. She earned 24 of them as Svitolina struggled massively with her serve, and managed to break the Ukrainian player seven times.

In turn, Putintseva struggled with her own serve too and lost it four times but managed to find a way past her opponent in the final two sets.

This win broke the three-match losing streak that Putintseva had endured before this and she will look to build on that after having exhibited some solid performances on clay last season too.

Can she overcome a player ranked 30 places above her though?

Alexandrova v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova has the edge at 3/5 but Putintseva will be no pushover and we expect this to go to a third set.
