Stevanovic Finds a Rare Win

Natalija Stevanovic has had a season to forget in 2023.

Ranked World No. 224, the Serbian has found herself on the short end of victories. Before the WTA Bogota, her last win came in the Thailand Open qualifiers against Kaylah Mcphee; that success was short-lived, as she immediately fell to Valeria Savinykh next.

Next up, she featured in ITF events in Germany, South Korea, and Kazakhstan but to no avail, as she lost three matches in a row.

Here in Colombia, Natalija snapped her losing streak by beating Ipek Oz and Irina Khromacheva in the qualifiers. Now, the 28-year-old has won a crucial match – her first WTA main draw event in almost three years.

Kostic ended up beating Marina Bassols Ribera 7-6(1), 7-5 to reach the second round and post her best results of the year. For what it’s worth, her record on clay is not that horrible, with 15 ITF finals on the surface.

Pigossi Beats Samudio

Brazil’s Laura Pigossi, currently ranked in the early 100s, dismissed Antonia Samudio 6-1, 6-0 to improve her tally to 9-9 for the season.

That was also her biggest victory of the year, as she required just 63 minutes to breeze into round two.

So far in 2023, the 28-year-old had a rough spell, with a semifinal showing in the Cali Challenger in Colombia being her best result. Perhaps, it is in Colombia again where she will deliver another deep run – after all, she did reach the final in Bogota last time around (loss to Tatjana Maria).

Considering Laura’s experience, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist has had quite a career with 18 singles and an astonishing 65 doubles finals on the ITF tour.

Pigossi v Kostic Prediction and Tip

Pigossi is the clear favourite here, and it is not difficult to see why. She is superbly experienced and is fielding a fair amount of momentum to deliver another tennis masterclass – this one against Kostic. Expect no surprises here.
