Ivashka Looking for More Wins on Clay

Ilya Ivashka played a fairly solid event in Barcelona last year losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets. The Belarussian missed part of this year due to injuries which is why his best record so far has been actually on clay. He won 3 out of 4 matches he played on the surface with his hard court record being only 3 of 9 matches won.

It’s not the surface that fit’s him most naturally because his groundstrokes are quite flat with no spin which leaves him vulnerable when he plays really good players on the surface. He’s been okay on it over the years with his record this year pretty good as well.

The biggest issue in his game right now is the lack of matches and the lack of confidence. Both can be fixed if he keeps playing well and last week’s outing in Monte-Carlo saw him defeat some solid players before he lost to Karen Khachanov who is in really strong form right now.

Borges is a player he can beat so he should like his chances here.

Borges Hoping for First Clay Win

Nuno Borges grew up on clay and it’s the one surface where he generally played his best tennis in his career. He only had one match so far on it this year as he tried to focus on hard courts and improve there. It was a good effort as he has a 16-5 record thanks to his serve and forehand.

The record on clay is only 0-1 with his lone match coming in Estoril two weeks ago. It wasn’t a very good match for him as Quentin Halys proved much better but that was the event where Halys played some of the best tennis he ever played.

If we look at last year’s score, Borges is 27-13 on clay and that’s much more like his usual self. Generally, he’s a solid play but his talent has a limit and I don’t expect him to ever become a top 20 talent.

Beating Ivashka will take a good effort especially when it comes to the serve because Ivashka will find a way to get break points. If Borges doesn’t serve well and allows the Belarusian to break him it will be hard to win. The forehand will have to be on point as well.

Ivashka v Borges Prediction and Tip

Ivashka is the better player overall but I don’t think he’ll have a very easy time here. I do think we can see something from Borges so the over looks like a good bet to me. When it comes to the winner I do think Ivashka gets it done in three.
