Thompson Has Struggled on Clay Over the Last Four Years

Jordan Thompson has won just five matches on clay since 2020 and those five wins have come across levels. So the Australian will be hoping for a change of fortune in Munich, where he begins his campaign against a low-ranked qualifier.

Thompson doesn’t have a great record on the tour this year, bringing a 3-7 main draw record into the tournament. Two of those wins had come over Gael Monfils and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Indian Wells, where he made it to the third round. His first win had come over Denis Kudla in Dalas.

While he has struggled to keep up the momentum on the tour, he has already won a Challenger title this year, beating Alex Michelsen in the final of the Rome Challenger on indoor surface.

Ranked no. 89th in the world, the Aussie has an overall record of 11-9 across levels. He is coming off a first round defeat in Houston, but will be hoping for a good start in his second clay court tournament of the season.

Cobolli Comes Through Qualifiers

Italy’s Flavio Cobolli made it to the main draw to Munich with a straight sets win over the Czech Republic’s Zdeněk Kolář in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Cobolli saved the only break point that he faced in the match and converted 4 of 6 breaking chances to win the one hour and 10 minute battle 6-2, 6-2.

The 20-year-old had also won his first qualifying round in straight sets, defeating Lukáš Rosol 6-1, 6-2. Cobolli was not broken in that match either as he saved 5 of 5 break points, while he converted five of eight to dispatch the Czech.

Ranked no. 204th in the world, the Italian, who plays his best tennis on clay, is 13-10 across levels in 2023. This will be his second tour-level tournament. He had qualified for the Pune Open earlier and won the first round in that tournament.

His best this year was a semifinal finish on clay in the Zadar Challenger.

Thompson v Cobolli Prediction and Tip

Thompson is far more experienced at the tour level and despite his poor clay court record since 2020, he will be the favourite to make a winning start in Munich.
