Top seed Carlos Alcaraz stayed on course for a second Barcelona Open title in two years as the defending champion edged out 10th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The world no. 2 fended off a determined effort from Davidovich Fokina in the first set as the world no. 38 came back from a break down twice, but it was Alcaraz who edged the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, Alcaraz saved 6 of 7 break points and converted 2 of 7 to win the two hour and 13 minute battle 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The 19-year-old improved his season record to 21-2 with the victory. he was a champion in buenos ires and Indian Wells and finished runner-up in Rio. He was also a semifinalist in Miami and will be playing in his fifth semifinal of the season in as many tournaments on Saturday.

Alcaraz, who defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in the final last year, is yet to drop a set in the tournament. He had begun the campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nuno Borges in the second round and then held off fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 7-5 in round 3.
