Begu Picks Up Form in Madrid

Irina Begu hasn’t played the best of tennis so far this year but she found a decent level in Madrid that could translate to Rome as well. It was a quarter-final exit against Maria Sakkari for the Romanian who traditionally plays her best tennis on red dirt.

She’s 5-2 this year though three of those wins came last week in Madrid with her overall score being 10-8. She posted an impressive 20-5 record last year though she didn’t play in Rome. Her best result in the past few years was the 3rd round so she’s not been that efficient at the event.

It’s to do with the condition as the court does play a bit slower which doesn’t really work too well with her aggressive style of play. She can get outhit by bigger hitters though she’s a fair bit more consistent than a lot of them.

Wang is the type of hitter that can outhit her from the baseline but the Chinese player doesn’t play as consistently as Begu.

Wang Overpowers Native Player in R1

Wang had to face an Italian in the first round and that’s not exactly a great draw in Rome. The Italians tend to show up with a pretty high level though Wang was able to navigate that initial challenge rather well.

Things only get harder in the second round as she faces Begu, a player who is really good on clay and who has all the necessary experience to give Wagn a lot of trouble in the match.

It’s not been that good of a year for Wang with a 6-9 record overall though she is 3-2 on clay which is the only surface she has a winning record on. Last year was a pretty decent run on the surface as well with 23 wins and only 10 defeats so she can play well.

The most important thing for her will be to sustain her level for the length of the match because she tends to go up and down quite a bit. If she does that then she can win.

Begu v Wang Prediction and Tip

It’s a tricky one to call because either player can win and mostly it will come down to which player has more consistency. It should favour Begu more but I could see this one being a 3-set match.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
