Martic Showing Signs of Sparkle

Following a 2022 season in which Martic won the Lausanne Open title, she has already shown what she’s capable of on clay this year. In the two tournaments she has played on red dirt so far, Martic has notched up a 5-2 win-loss record, including a couple of qualifier wins at Stuttgart.

It was, however, her showing at the Madrid Open that has had people talking.

Wins over Laura Siegemund and Anna Kalinskaya took her to the fourth round there before she stunned the 1/4 favourite Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets in that match.

It needed the world number one Iga Swiatek to end her stay in the competition but that shouldn’t take anything away from Martic’s performances over the last two weeks.

The question now is if she can replicate the same here in Rome where she was a semifinalist in 2021?

Osorio Scrapes Past Gracheva

It took her three sets, two tie-breakers and two hours and 43 minutes but a fighting Osorio managed to emulate her Rome Open showing from 2022 this year too.

Osorio, who had made it to the main draw with with a couple of easy qualifying wins, defeated Varvara Gracheva 7-6 (4), 1-6 7-6 (4) despite getting broken a whopping nine times in the encounter.

What made the win a bit bizarre was Osorio broke her opponent only six times but still found a way to notch up the win. In fact, she was down three match-points in the final set at 3-5, and then frittered away three match-points of her own before clinching the victory.

What needs to now be seen is if Osorio can replicate her performances at Madrid and Reus, where she managed to win successive matches apiece.
