Haddad Maia Set for Rome Debut

Despite playing on the pro tour for many years, Beatriz Haddad Maia has never played a match at the Italian Open.

So her Rome debut will come against the backdrop of a stunning defeat to 15-year-old Mirra Andreeva in Madrid where the Brazilian became the second high-profile casualty in the youngster’s meteoric run to the round of 16.

It’s a loss she’ll be keen to forget and there is no better way to bounce back than in another WTA 1000. So far in 2023, she’s been particularly quiet at this level, winning just two matches in four WTA 1000 tournaments, and both came at the March Sunshine Swing.

Haddad Maia’s two clay-court wins this year came in the indoors in Stuttgart where she earned two asterisk wins over Martina Trevisan and Elena Rybakina, with both players retiring in those matches.

Ruse Thumps Fruhvirtova

Elena-Gabriela Ruse thrashed Linda Fruhvirtova in her opening round 6-1 6-0 in an hour and three minutes. It was a defeat that will surely rank as the worst in Fruhvirova’s short career on the tour thus far and a stark reminder that the young Czech still has a lot of gaps in her game.

Ruse exploited them. Having already acclimatized with the Rome courts from qualifying, she set the record straight in the main draw. Fruhvirtova’s serving yips were not cured, and as a result, served seven double faults in the match and won a paltry 11% of points behind her second serve.

The Romanian won six of nine break points while saving six on her own serve. Victory earned Ruse her first main draw win on clay at the fourth attempt this season. Can she pull off the upset against Haddad Maia?

Haddad Maia v Ruse Prediction and Tip

Ruse is on a roll in Rome, but the Fruhvirtova performance could probably be one of the worst you’ll see all week. The Romanian will test Haddad Maia’s rally tolerance and possibly cover the games spread, but she doesn’t have the aggression to overpower the Brazilian from the baseline for the upset win.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Haddad Maia to win: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games: 10/11
