Pera at Career-Best Ranking

A third round appearance at the Charleston Open was followed by another third round showing in Madrid about a week or so ago and that has been enough for Pera to make it to 32nd in the world. That’s her best ever ranking.

Pera had started off the season ranked 44th in the world and slipped to 45th before she turned things around with a third round appearance at the Australian Open as well. Soon after that she was participating in the Indian Wells, where again, Pera made round three.

It’s been these consistent showings in the big-ticket tournaments that’s earning Pera enough points to remain within touching distance of breaking into the top 30.

What she would now hope for is to replicate her clay court showing from the previous season where she had won a couple of titles.

And while winning the Italian Open might not be a realistic goal what with the likes of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka roaring on court, she would hope for another third round showing at the very least.

Tsurenko Easy Winner over Svitolina

It’s still early days for Elina Svitolina since returning to competitive tennis and Tsurenko took full advantage of the invariable waywardness that has come with it.

Tsurenko was on court for an hour and 37 minutes and was broken three times but still came through in straight sets against Svitolina.

It was Svitolina who drew first blood in the opening set to go 2-0 up but three breaks later, the two were tied 4-4. Tsurenko earned herself a decisive break in the next game before saving a break-point to win the set.

The second set was a lot easier for Tsurenko who went ahead, lost her serve and then broke Svitolina twice in a row to clinch it. This makes it 4-2 for Tsurenko on clay with the Ukrainian player having reached the third round at the Madrid Open last week or so too.

Can she repeat that showing?
