Swiatek Hoping to Shrug off Madrid Final Loss

She continues to rule the tennis world but Swiatek might not be very pleased with her finals defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the Italian Open.

Having eased into the title-decider after registering her ninth successive win on clay, Swiatek was a 1/4 favourite against the world number two but fell in a fighting three-setter to Sabalenka.

That followed a victory over the same opponent in the final of the previous clay tournament she had played in Stuttgart last month.

Swiatek will want to shrug off that defeat as one of those things but will have an eye on the difference in the ranking points between her and Sabalenka. Having had the kind of season that she did in 2022, even a runner-up trophy couldn’t prevent Swiatek from losing points.

While she still maintains a health lead over Sabalenka, Swiatek will want to do a lot better in Rome than she did in Madrid and she could start that juggernaut with a comfortable opening win against Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova Routs Errani

Pavlyuchenkova might have been ranked outside the top 500 because of her absence from the sport but she had still gone into her opening round match against Sara Errani as a favourite. And she lived up to those 3/5 odds as she came away a straight-set winner.

In a match lasting an hour and three minutes, Pavlyuchenkova registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Errani, effectively doubling her WTA win count for the season.

Such was one-sided nature of the victory that Pavlyuchenkova faced no break-points in the entire encounter even as she broke Errani a whopping five times from the seven opportunities she got. She also lost just four points on her first serves.

Things might not be that easy come the second round – in fact Pavlyuchenkova will see what chalk and cheese means when she faces Swiatek and compares that with her meeting with Errani.

That said, these are still early days of Pavlyuchenkova finding her feet back into the competitive world of tennis and she could use as much game time as possible.

Swiatek v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

While a straight-set win looks very likely for Swiatek, we could see some resistance from Pavlyuchenkova. Not a lot but enough for us to recommend an over 16.5 games in the encounter.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Pavlyuchenkova +7.5: 8/11
