Qinwen Zheng v Alize Cornet Head to Head

Zheng leads Cornet 1-0 in their head-to-head, with the Frenchwoman retiring while trailing 6-0 3-0 at the 2022 French Open.

Zheng Falls to Alexandrova in Madrid

Qinwen Zheng lost a close three-set battle against Russian big hitter Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round of the Madrid Open.

Zheng won the first set 7-5, expertly neutralizing Alexandrova’s power. But she quickly faded for the next two sets. It was her eighth defeat of the season and one that halts her top-20 charge for the moment.

The Chinese No. 1 can still pick up some valuable points in Rome where she is set to mark her tournament debut. She doesn’t have any points to defend between now and Roland Garros.

So there is a strong possibility she might be going to Paris in a few weeks with a top-2o ranking, highlighting her immense rise in the past year, and 12 months on from her fabulous display against Iga Swiatek at the clay slam.

Cornet Keeps Qualifier Martincova At Bay

Alize Cornet dug out a 7-6 6-4 win over Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova to advance into the second round of the Italian Open for the first time since 2019.

Both players broke each other’s serves twice in the opening set which went into a tiebreak and that lasted an hour and three minutes. Cornet dominated it from start to finish garnering three mini-breaks.

Maritncova took a 2-0 lead in the second set. But despite a few jittery moments on serve, Cornet turned the set around, breaking Martincova twice in quick succession to move 3-2 up. And the French veteran never relinquished serve thereafter, closing out the match to 15.

It was Cornet’s fifth win of a subpar season which has lacked inspiration and upset wins that have very much defined her career. Could she be overdue for one such win on Thursday?

Zheng v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Cornet’s season has been uninspiring, to say the least. And unless there is a considerable drop in level by Zheng, I can’t see the Chinese No. 1 showing any empathy here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zheng to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
