Kalinina Cruises Past Blinkova

Anhelina Kalinina ended a four-match losing streak with a straight sets drubbing of Anna Blinkova in the second round of the Italian Open.

The 30th seed Ukrainian, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 26 minutes to beat the Russian 6-2, 6-2. Kalinina served seven aces in the match. She was not broken by the world no. 73 as she saved all seven of the break points that she faced. In contrast, Kalinina had 10 chances to break Blinkova’s serve and she capitalised on four of them.

This was the world no. 47’s first win on clay this year. She had lost her opening matches in Charleston and Madrid and had also lost her last two hard court matches, in the third round at Indian Wells and the second round in Miami.

Kalinina has won consecutive matches just thrice this year. She was a quarterfinalist in Hobart and lost in the third rounds at the Australian Open and in Dubai.

Last year Kalinina was knocked out in the second round of her Rome debut. This year she has moved to round three. Can she win two in a row?

Kenin Stuns Sabalenka

Sofia Kenin stunned second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the second round on Thursday to claim her first top 10 win since beating world no. 1 Ash Barty in the semifinal of the Australian Open in 2020.

Kenin, who went on to win the Melbourne major in 2020, ousted the Belarusian in an hour and 39 minutes. After both players traded two breaks each in the first set, Kenin dominated the tiebreak to take a 1-0 lead. The 24-year-old was in complete control of the second set as she broke the world no. 2 twice to complete a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory.

This was the first time in 2023 when Sabalenka, the Madrid Open champion, lost before the quarterfinal stage.

Kenin, who is playing in Rome for the fourth time in her career, had begun her campaign with a three-set win over Cristina Bucșa.

Thanks to her two wins she has improved her season record to 11-10. The world no. 134 was a semifinalist in Hobart. Can she win three consecutive matches for the second time this year?
