World no. 21 Qinwen Zheng won her debut match in Rome on Thursday to move into the third round of the tournament.

The 20-year-old Chinese player, who had received a first round bye, won her fifth consecutive opening round match in 2023 as she knocked out France’s Alize Cornet 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

The two-hour-and-nine-minute contest saw Zheng save 3 of 5 break points and convert 4 of 14.

Competing in her 10th tournament of the season, Zheng has now won her opening round match nine times. The only time she lost her opener this year was in Doha, where the Chinese player went down to Maria Sakkari in three.

Overall Zheng improved her season record to 14-8. She was a semifinalist in Abu Dhabi but has not reached the last eight in the other tournaments. Can she take another stride towards a second quarterfinal of the season with a win on Saturday?

Bondar Stuns Pliskova

Qualifier Anna Bondar continued her impressive run in Rome as she shocked the 2019 champion and two-time runner-up Karolina Pliskova in the second round on Thursday.

The 13th seed Czech, who had a first round bye, put up a stern resistance in the first set, but after Bondar edged the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead,  she dominated the proceedings from there on.

Bondar raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set before beating the world no. 14, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Bondar, ranked no. 93rd in the world, had qualified by beating Amandine Hesse and Marina Bassols Ribera in the two qualifying rounds. She carried that form into the main draws, where she began with an easy win over Tatjana Maria.

Bondar improved to 10-11 overall this season following Thursdays win . Can she keep her extraordinary run going?

This is going to be a close affair. Bondar has looked good so far but the Chinese player has displayed better form and quality in recent years. Expect Zheng to advance into the fourth round.
