Giorgi Eases Past Alexandrova

After a come-from-behind win over Arantxa Rus in the first round, Camila Giorgi needed an hour and 30 minutes to oust 15th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets in the second round on Friday.

The Italian won 76% points on the back of her first serve, saved 2 of 3 break points and converted 4 of 11 to beat the Russian 6-4, 6-2.

Giorgi, who won her fourth WTA title by claiming the Merida title earlier this year, has been in decent form this year and the two wins in Rome improved her season record to 13-8.

The Italian is playing in the main draw in Rome for the sixth time, but she had not won a single match since winning her debut match in 2014. She ended a five match losing streak with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over the Dutch qualifier in the first round this year.

Having added another win on Friday, she has got into a rhythm. Can she keep her chances alive with a third consecutive win on Sunday?

Muchova Rebounds to Send Trevisan Packing

Karolina Muchova showed nerves of steel as she rebounded from a set down and then saved a match point in the final set before edging past 18th seed Martina Trevisan in the second round of the Rome Open on Friday.

The world no. 52 has been in good touch this year as a result of which she is climbing back the rankings after falling out of the top 100 due to an injury last year.

Muchova came into the tournament with a 16-6 season record and has improved that record further with back-to-back victories in Rome.

The Czech had begun the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova. She followed that up by clinching a three-set thriller against the Italian on Friday.

In a two-hour-and-55-minute contest, Muchova was edged in a highly competitive first set, but she got the lone  break in the second set to draw level. In the final set, Muchova raced to a 4-0 lead, but Trevisan came back by winning the next four games in a row. Trevisan then won another to make it 5-4 and held a match point at 30-40 in the next game. Muchova saved the match point and then won the last two games as well to win the match 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Giorgi v Muchova Prediction and Tip

Having reached three quarterfinals on hard courts this year, Muchova has displayed good form this year. She has a better record on clay than Giorgi and would be a slight favourite to win the contest and move into the round of 16.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Muchova to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
