Elena Rybakina v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Moscow Open which Vondrousova had won.

Rybakina Benefits from Kalinskaya Injury

And by the above statement one actually means, ‘benefits’.

Because these two had met two weeks ago in Madrid and Anna Kalinskaya had come away a winner there. And here, in the seven games played, Kalinskaya had looked a better player before having to retire from the match to send a relieved Rybakina into the fourth round.

Earlier, Rybakina had overcome Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the second round following an opening bye.

While Rybakina has climbed to a career-best ranking of sixth in the world she has shown to have had her issues in both the clay court competitions she participated this season, Stuttgart Open and in Madrid.

Which is why, it’s no surprise that it’s her opponent who will start as a favourite.

Vondrousova Demolishes Sakkari

We are very close to seeing some of Vondrousova’s best tennis. The best that had seen her make the final of the French Open in 2019.

Because after a three-set win over Kaia Kanepi in the first round, she had routed Bianca Andreescu 6-0, 6-1 in the second. And if anyone thought that win was a fluke, the Czech player sent Maria Sakkari on her way with another straight-set victory.

Vondrousova was on court for an hour and 29 minutes as he went on to get past Sakkari 7-5, 6-3 with four breaks of serves. The world number 70 lost her serve just once – it came in the 10th game of the opening set where she floundered under the pressure of serving for the set.

Quickly, Vondrousova overturned that and broke Sakkari back again in the next game before serving out the set.

Soon after that, Vondrousova went 3-1 ahead in the second set and broke Sakkari for the second time as the Greek number one served to stay in the encounter.

Vondrousova will enter this match knowing this is a good chance for her to break into the top 50 and climb the ladder in her journey back to the top-20 like was the case earlier.
