Madison Keys v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Kalinina has won them both including one at the WTA Rome last season.

Keys Benefits from Azarenka Withdrawal

Winner of the Madrid Open doubles title a week ago, Victoria Azarenka would have been looking to take that form forward into her singles displays at the Rome Open.

Unfortunately for her, and luckily for Keys, Azarenka wasn’t even able to take to court for her third round match against her American opponent after suffering a leg injury. As a result of that injure, Azarenka withdrew from the tournament, leaving Keys a free pass to make it to the fourth round.

This follows a quarterfinal appearance at the Charleston Open for Keys who had herself opted out of the Madrid Open following that showing.

She had earlier earned a first round bye and then defeated Magdalena Frech in the second round, winning 6-3, 6-2. Can she now pull off a win against a player who has shown some solid form in this tournament?

Kalinina Sends Sabalenka-Vanquisher Out

Sofia Kenin had come into this match on the back of some confidence-inducing performance, having sent the Madrid Open winner Aryna Sabalenka packing. Which is probably why there wasn’t much to choose between her and Kalinina in their third round encounter, with both going in at 10/11 to win it.

It was Kalinina who came through though and quite easily at that too, winning 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 37 minutes.

The 30th-seeded Kalinina shrugged off a break-back from Kenin in the fourth game of the opening set and at 3-3, scored a decisive break. She held serve to love and then served it out at 5-4 to take the lead.

The second set was a lot easier for Kalinina who broke Kenin twice from the two chances she got and saved four break-points on her own serve to come away a winner.

Having earlier overpowered Anna Blinkova, Kalinina will now enter this important clash with a lot of confidence.

Keys v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Keys might be a bookmakers’ favourite but we reckon Kalinina holds a slight edge given the manner in which she has won both her rounds. Could see a gruelling match to decide the winner.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kalinina to win a set – Yes: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
