Their only previous meeting came last year on the Challenger circuit where O’Connell won in three sets on clay.

O’Connell Shown His Capabilities on Clay

While his countryman, fellow Aussie Alexei Popyrin knocked O’Connell out of the competition in the first round of the Rome Masters, he has shown an overall sense of calmness on this surface this season.

This can be seen from O’Connell’s performances at the Marrakesh Open where he made the quarterfinal at the expense of Botic van de Zandschulp, despite starting out an 8/5 underdog in that encounter.

However, O’Connell’s biggest win of the career came only a couple of weeks later when he took out Alexander Zverev en route the semifinal of the Munich Open. He was a 7-6 (2), 6-4 winner over the former top five player.

O’Connell will now hope he can shrug off the Rome showing and take his form for the season into this tournament, hopefully going deep into the competition. He shouldn’t have a lot of difficulties first up.

Serdarušić Coming off Gruelling Qualifier Win

Serdarušić has featured in the main draw at the highest level in the past but in a career that began 2014, he has won just two ATP matches. Not surprisingly, his career best ranking is 167th in the world and with Serdarušić struggling to get going this season, it’s fallen to outside of the top 300 at the moment.

What will help is the way he’s gone about his business at the Oeiras Challenger last week and again in the qualifiers this week.

Serdarušić made it past two qualifiers in Oeiras before winning a main round there. And in Geneva, Serdarušić eased past Marek Gengel in the first qualifier and then registered a scrappy win over Arthur Cazaux in the second.

Interestingly, he missed five match-points in that match before clinching the victory.

He might not get those many opportunities against the in-form O’Connell though.

O’Connell v Serdarušić Prediction and Tip

O’Connell shouldn’t have a lot of trouble here as he looks to carve out a straight-set win over his opponent who is nearly 220 places behind him.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: O’Connell to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: O’Connell to win in straight sets: 1/1
