Griekspoor on a Four-Match Losing Run

It’s not like Griekspoor has a very poor record on clay but this season has been rather underwhelming for the Dutchman when he’s taken to the red dirt.

Griekspoor, who began the season with a title win in Pune and is 13-5 on other surfaces for the season, has won just one match on clay in 2023. He has lost four to go with that which includes a second round loss at the Marrakesh Open and successive opening defeats in Monte-Carlo, Banja Luka and Madrid.

A retirement in the first round of the Madrid Masters due to injury meant he was unable to feature in Rome but the good news is he is back.

And while his fitness will be tested, he returns to the site where he had made the quarterfinals last season. Plus he takes on a player who is now looking at the Challenger circuit to make things happen for him.

Travaglia Comes Through the Qualifiers

A former world number 60, Travaglia has slowly fallen off the grid with the Italian finishing the last season ranked 338th in the world.

Earlier this year, his ranking further nose-dived to outside the top 400 before Travaglia made some recovery thanks to his performances on the Futures and Challengers circuit.

Travaglia was a finalist in one Futures tournament, and made a couple of second round appearances on the Challenger circuit. He then won both his qualifying rounds here in straight sets to enter the main draw to set up this meeting with Griekspoor.

The last time Travaglia had won a main round in an ATP tournament was about 15 months ago in Marseille. As opening round matches go, he would know he could have faced a tougher one but given Griekspoor’s form he will consider himself to have a chance.

Griekspoor v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

Griekspoor can be expected to win if he’s fully fit but Travaglia could prove a handful on clay. Expect the Italian to grab a set.

  • Low Risk Tip: Travaglia to win a set – Yes: 4/6
