Wu Saves MP to Beat Huesler

Wu Yibing saved a match point in the deciding set tiebreak before taking down the local favourite Marc-Andrea Huesler in the first round of the Geneva Open on Monday.

The world no. 59, who had registered his first-ever tour level clay court victory in the first round of the Rome Masters last week, got his second win on the surface when he battled past the Swiss 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in two hours and 14 minutes.

Wu won just 96 of the 204 points played in the match, but it was his ability to win the key moments of the contest that allowed him to advance to the next round.

It’s turning out to be a fascinating year for the 23-year-old, who had earlier made history by becoming the first male Chinese player to win an ATP title in the Open era, when he captured the crown in Dallas.

He also became the first Chinese man to score a top 10 win at the tour level.

This is the first year, when Wu is playing on clay at the tour level. Monday’s win improved him to 2-3 on the surface. Can he improve that record further on Tuesday?

Cecchinato Dumps Out the Fifth Seed

He may not have gone deep in most of the tournaments, but Marco Cecchinato has been winning on consistent basis on clay and on Monday, he began his Geneva pen campaign with an upset win over the fifth seed Ben Shelton.

Cecchinato came back from 3-5 down to take the first set. He was then outplayed by the world no. 35 in the second set, but he bounced bak again in the final set to clinch a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

The Italian, ranked no. 73rd in the world, saved half of the six break points that he faced and converted 4 of 11 to secure win in two hours and four minutes.

This is the third consecutive year when he has reached the round of 16 in Geneva, but he is yet to reach the last eight stage.

The 2018 French Open semifinalist has featured in five ATP finals, all on clay, winning three of them. He has mostly played on clay this year and is 11-8 on the surface.

His best this year was a semifinal finish in Estoril, while his most recent effort saw him reach the third round in Rome last week, where he beat Roberto Bautista Agut en route.

Wu v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Cecchinato is an accomplished clay court player, while Wu is inexperienced and will be playing his sixth tour-level match on clay on Tuesday. So expect this to be a lopsided contest with the Italian sailing through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cecchinato to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
