Zapata Miralles Eases Past Ukrainian

Zapata Miralles has already enjoyed the best season of his career, reaching the fourth round in Madrid and the third in Rome. And he will have ambitions of matching his performance at the French Open last year where he reached the fourth round, by far his best result in a Grand Slam.

His warm-up continued with a comfortable straight sets victory over the Ukrainian qualifier, Vitaliy Sachko, ranked 286th in the world, in their first round match.

Although Zapata Miralles had to save break points in his opening service game, he was the one to make a decisive move with a break of serve, and he followed that up with a second to take the set.

When Sachko broke midway through the second set, he had a glimmer of hope, but that was quickly extinguished as Zapata Miralles broke back immediately.

Sachko saved more break points and then a match point, but his reprieve was short-lived, as Zapata Miralles made his second match point count.

O’Connell Made to Work by Croat Qualifier

Although previously not known as a clay court player, O’Connell has enjoyed a good run on the surface this year, having reached the third round in Marrakech and the semi-finals in Munich.

A second round defeat in Madrid, and a first round exit in Rome are more what are expected of the Australian, but he made a winning start in Geneva, although the Croatian qualifier Nino Serdarusic, the world number 307, provided a much sterner test than he would have wanted.

The first set was dominated by serve to the extent that neither man could create a break point. Instead it was left to a tie-break to decide it, which the Australian claimed.

Serve continued to dominate in the second set, until the tenth game when O’Connell held three match points. Not only did Serdarusic save them all, but he went on to force another tie-break, which he took this time.

Unfortunately for the Croat, he promptly dropped his serve at the start of the third set, and O’Connell was able to seize control of the match, breaking his opponent twice more to book his second round place in the end.
