Ruud Starts off as a Two-Time Defending Champion

It’s been a wobbly season of tennis in its own way for Ruud but on clay he has shown some signs of a turnaround. The world number four, who was 5-6 in hardcourt competitions this year, went on to win the first clay-court competition he featured in at Estoril.

This was followed by a couple of rather underwhelming results for the Norwegian with Ruud losing to Jan-Lennard Struff and Matteo Arnaldi in the early stages of Monte-Carlo and Madrid.

Ruud looked to turn things around again in Rome, where aided by a reasonable draw he made the semifinal where Holger Rune ended his stay in the tournament. It needed Rune three fighting sets before he could stop Ruud from making the final.

What’s fascinating is that Ruud has opted to take part in a tournament a week before the start of the French Open – looking to continue the momentum he had so sorely lacked earlier.

First up is an opponent who doesn’t the best clay court track record.

Wolf Easy Winner over Dellien

Hugo Dellien would have thought he had a chance to get past Wolf given the latter’s struggles on clay. The American, however, was coming off a third round appearance at the Rome Masters and that rhythm continued here in Geneva as he carved out an easy win over Dellien.

Wolf was on court for an hour and 16 minutes for his 6-4, 6-2 victory which helped him seal his place in the second round.

There were two break-points that Wolf faced in the entire encounter, both of which came when he led 3-0 in the second set – i.e. by which time the match had been all but over. He saved both to go 4-0 up and complete the win.

This made it 5-3 for Wolf on clay for this year, a far better performance than ever in his career. Will that, however, be enough for Wolf to feel confident enough to challenge Ruud?

Ruud v Wolf Prediction and Tip

Ruud’s the favourite here although he doesn’t inspire the kind of confidence he did on clay till last season. Still backing him to win but might not be the most straightforward of wins.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win: 2/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
