Mannarino Dumps Out Krajinovic

World no. 47 Adrian Mannarino ended a five-match losing streak with a straight sets win over Filip Krajinovic in the first round of the Geneva Open on Monday.

Mannarino, who had last won a match at the Oeiras Challenger, got his first tour-level clay court win of the season as he dispatched the Serb 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 21 minutes.

The 34-year-old lefty won 81% points on his first serve although he got just 53% of his first serves in. He converted 4 of 10 break points and saved 1 of 2 to win just his second clay court match of the season to improve to 2-6 on the surface, across levels.

Mannarino, who was a quarterfinalist in Delray Beach and Dallas and had made it to the round of 16 in Miami, has always found things difficult on clay courts.

The first round came against a player who himself is struggling for form. However, Krajinovic is a better player on clay and therefore the win would have certainly helped Mannarino’s confidence.

Ivashka Ousts Pella

Facing Mannarino will be Ilya Ivashka, who also ended a five-match losing streak in the first round of the tournament, defeating Guido Pella in straight sets.

Ivashka took a one-set-to-love lead after getting the sole break in the middle of the opening set. He also got the first break in the second, however, Pella responded with an immediate break to send the set back on serve. But a late second break in the set sealed the match for the Belarusian, who sealed a 6-4, 7-5 victory in an hour and 31 minutes.

Ivashka is 4-5 on clay this season, but that includes qualifying round wins in Monte-Carlo. He had last won a match in the first round in Monte Carlo, but lost the second round and since then made first round exits in Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Bordeaux Challenger.

A quarterfinalist in Geneva last year, can Ivashka win a second match on the trot and reach the last eight again this year?

Mannarino v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

Ivashka has played a lot more on clay than Mannarino in recent years and the Belarusian has even succeeded in winning more matches on the surface. He also has a 6-2 record in Geneva, including two qualifying wins in 2021. Expect him to beat the Frenchman and move into the quarters for the second successive year.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ivashka to win: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
