Samsonova Struggling with Form

Liudmila Samsonova is going through what many tennis pros go through (some repeatedly) at some point in their careers – a tryst with form and consistency.

Although she is ranked World No. 15 – respectable by all means – she will need to do something soon to turn around the tables.

Since her runner-up feat in WTA Abu Dhabi, where she dispatched the likes of Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng en route, Samsonova has not quite managed to reach the closing rounds again.

In Dubai and Madrid, she made it to the round of 16, while in Rome, Miami, Indian Wells, and Stuttgart, she fell in the early rounds. Her record stands at 11-11, all things considered.

However, it is worth considering that many of Liudmila’s losses have come at the hands of well-reputed players like Donna Vekic, Amanda Anisimova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek. In other instances, she fell to Zheng, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Bernarda Pera.

Volynets Fielding Momentum

Katie Volynets, age 21, may be ranked World No. 90 but don’t let that fool you – after all, the American is 17-11 so far. She is boasting a fair bit of momentum – more than Samsonova – on clay courts.

It is not entirely surprising, seeing that historically, she has performed well on these courts (13-7 in 2022, 10-7 in 2021).

While she may have lost in the openers in Madrid and Rome 1000 events, Volynets made up for it with semifinal showings in Saint-Malo and Paris Challengers. Earlier in the season, she had reached the same stage in WTA Austin as well.

Katie’s best result came in the Aus Open, where, as a qualifier, she made it as far as round three (beating Veronika Kudermetova en route).

Last year, Volynets made it to round two in the Paris Slam – in all fairness, her chances of doing so again are not that bad.

Samsonova v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Samsonova may have a superior pedigree, but clay is not her strongest suit. Add to this her comparative lack of form and Volynets’ decent streak, it becomes evident why the Russian has a battle on her hands.

Expect an entertaining affair with many games in the offing.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Samsonova to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
