Alexander Zverev v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Zverev leads 2-1. All three came on clay and in 2019.

Zverev Benefits from Yibing Retirement

Having had no worries in getting past Christopher Eubanks in the second round, Zverev needed a mere 22 minutes on court in his quarterfinal against Wu Yibing.

The German led Yibing 4-1 in the first set when his opponent opted to retire from the match because of fitness concerns. With the French Open only days away no player would want to take any sort of a risk and that might have been the reasoning behind Yibing’s decision.

What that meant, however, is Zverev is through to his third successive semifinal at the Geneva Open. He had been ousted by Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021 while it was Rafael Nadal who got the better of Zverev in 2022.

This time around he isn’t facing an opponent of the pedigree of either of those aforementioned two but Zverev will need to be careful given his own form concerns and Jarry’s performances on clay.

Jarry Stuns Ruud

Despite starting out a 5/2 underdog for his quarterfinal against Casper Ruud, Jarry managed to find a way to climb out of a hole and send the world number four packing.

Jarry needed over two hours and 30 minutes and came back from a set down to claim his place in the semifinal for the first time in a tournament since his Santiago Open win earlier in February this year.

After having defeated Dusan Lajovic with ease in the first round and getting a walkover from Tallon Griekspoor in the second, Jarry looked to be headed out when he dropped his serve to love in the eighth game of the first set. Ruud held on to his to win the first set.

In the second, Jarry held on to his serve rather easily but wasn’t able to break his opponent. What he did do was to push the set into a tie-breaker which he shockingly won 7-2.

The decider went to serve till 3-3 and after they traded breaks, the score read 4-4 and then 5-5. Jarry then broke Ruud before winning the next game off his own serve to advance to the semifinal.
