Hubert Hurkacz v David Goffin Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two meetings. Goffin won at the Rome Masters last year, while Hurkacz got his revenge in Roland Garros a few days later.

Hurkacz’s Current Clay Court Form Is Concerning

Last year, Hubert Hurkacz produced his best-ever result at the Roland Garros, reaching the last 16 for the first time in his career. But the Pole couldn’t reach a second Grand Slam quarterfinal as the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist was beaten by eventual finalist Casper Ruud in four sets.

Hurkacz comes into this year’s competition not in the best of forms. The world no. 13 is 3-4 from his four clay court tournaments this year. Last year he had already reached two clay court quarterfinals heading to the French Open, but this year, his best on clay is a round of 16 finish at Monte-Carlo Masters, where he had won his first two matches before falling to Jannik Sinner.

Overall Hurkacz is 17-11 in 2023 and that includes a title success in Marseille, where he beat Benjamin Bonzi in the final to claim his sixth ATP title from seven finals.

He is a fine clay court player and will be looking to make a good start.

Goffin Struggling for Consistency

He started the season at no. 53, then broke into the top 50 for a while, but David Goffin has seen a sharp fall in the rankings over the last one month as a result of which he has fallen out of the top 100.

Ranked no. 113, the former no. 7 has a 3-4 season record on clay at the tour level this year. He is 6-6 overall on clay, having recently reached the semifinal in Aix en Provence Challenger.

The 32-year-old Goffin, who won a Challenger event earlier this year, is 7-10 on the tour this year. But while his season numbers haven’t been too encouraging, the four-time major quarterfinalist will look to draw inspiration from his past Grand Slam performances at this year’s French Open.

Goffin’s best effort at Roland Garros saw him make it to the last eight in 2016. He has also lost in the round of 16 twice and in the third round on four occasions. One of those was last year, when the Belgian went down to Hurkacz in the round of 32.

Can Goffin return to form with a statement win in the first round?

Hurkacz v Goffin Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a tight contest, but given their recent forms, Hurkacz is a slight favourite going into the contest.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hurkacz to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
