Madrid Quarter-Finalist Zhang

This will be the first time that Zhang has appeared in the main draw in Paris. His only previous attempt to enter this tournament ended in the second round of qualifying two years ago, although he went on from there to become the first Chinese man to make the first round of Wimbledon in the open era.

Last year he became the first Chinese man to break into the top 100, and he continues to set records.

Earlier this month in Madrid, he became the first man from his country to reach a Masters’ quarter-final, with a run that included wins over Denis Shapovalov, Cameron Norrie, and Taylor Fritz.

He has not been able to emulate those performances since.

Zhang failed to qualify in Rome, and, though he did qualify in Lyon, he was beaten in the first round by the French teenager, Arthur Fils.

Lajovic Already a Clay Court Winner This Season

Lajovic has already won a clay court season this year, picking up the inaugural Banja Luka trophy.

That was his first senior ATP title since winning in Croatia nearly four years ago.

The Serb is looking to improve on his recent record in Paris. In his debut year at Roland Garros in 2014 he reached the fourth round, but since then, one third round appearance in 2019 was the best he has managed.

He has struggled to emulate his achievements in Bosnia recently, although he did reach the third round in Madrid, notching up a victory over Felix Augur-Aliassime along the way.

However, his stays in both Rome and Geneva turned out to be short ones, as he was beaten in the first round in both events.

Zhang v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Despite his achievements in Madrid, Zhang is not a natural clay court player, whereas the surface is Lajovic’s forte. If he can find anything like the form that saw him win the title in Banja Luka, then he should advance to the second round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Lajovic to win: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 5/6
