Magda Linette v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two ladies; they last met in Charleston in 2022 where Linette won in three sets. Interestingly, Fernandez’s win over the Pole came right here in Paris in 2020.

Fernandez Looking for a Turnaround

2023 has not been that great for the former world number 13, Leylah Fernandez. Now ranked #51, her current record stands at 16-12, but it is not all that bad – considering she is still just 20 and has done well to gain some experience.

Most recently, she was a semifinalist in ITF Madrid – a move she made after losing in the first round in Madrid and Italian Open. Thereafter, the Canadian participated in WTA Rabat, where she lost to Peyton Stearns in round two.

Much of her season has gone by in such early defeats, sans the ASB Classic, where Fernandez was a quarterfinalist.

The 2021 US Open Finalist has done in doubles, however, having made it to the final in Auckland and Miami with Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Taylor Townsend, respectively.

Leylah has some history in Paris – notably, the quarterfinal showing in French Open last season. But whether she can translate that into a good result here is a tough question.

Linette, in a Similar Tide

Magda Linette, who rose to fame after reaching the semifinal in the Australian Open this season, finds herself navigating similar waters as Fernandez. She is 16-13, and recently, she lost to the out-of-form Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Strasbourg Open round two.

Since her glorious run in Melbourne, Linette has been somewhat consistent. The 31-year-old reached the quarterfinal in Merida and the fourth round in the Miami Open.

On clay, it’s been a series of mixed results for the Polish player. The current World No. 21 is 4-4 on the surface, courtesy of third-round exits in Madrid, Rome, and Charleston.

If it is any consolation, only one of her four losses has been rather surprising (Mirra Andreeva), with the rest coming at the hands of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Madison Keys.

Linette v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Linette has a lot of experience when compared to Leylah, which obviously gives her a concrete advantage. She has also done better in the recent clay tournaments, which is all the more reason for her to be optimistic here. However, it may not be a simple, straightforward match for her.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Linette to win 2-1: 7/4
