Second Visit to Paris for Rising Zheng

Qinwen Zheng had a debut to remember at last year’s French Open, upsetting former champion Simona Halep en route to the fourth round. She was the only player to take a set from Iga Swiatek in the Pole’s title success in Paris last season.

That result earmarked a career breakthrough for Zheng who went on to win a WTA 125K title in Valencia and reached a Tour-level final in Tokyo.

Zheng’s rise did not stop there. She has broken the world’s top 20 this season with a series of breathtaking performances and deep runs at tournaments.

Among her notable accomplishments in 2023 so far include a semifinal run at the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi and a quarterfinal finish in Rome.

Zheng has compiled a solid 16-9 record for the season. And considering she missed about 50 days of action in between due to injury, it’s been a great return.

Zidansek Beats Bolsova to Qualify

Tamara Zidansek entered this year’s qualifying draw at Roland Garros as the fourth seed. But the Slovenian was not guaranteed an easy pass into the main draw.

Zidansek battle through a pair of grueling three-setters, beating Nigina Abduraimova and 21-year-old Russian Anastasia Zakharova. That gave her a spot in the final qualifying round against Aliona Bolsova.

The former French Open semifinalist produced her best display of the qualifying round, taking down the Spaniard 6-2 7-6, converting seven of her 10 break points.

Once ranked as high as No. 22, Zidansek’s ranking has fallen off a cliff in the past year and is currently outside the world’s top 100.

Two years ago she came within one win from the French Open final and as mind-boggling as that sounds now, the Slovenian is the more experienced player in her match against Zheng.

Zheng v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Zidansek is a former semifinalist in this tournament, but she hasn’t played at the top level for a while now. Zheng is on the rise and should be winning comfortably.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zheng to win: 1/4
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Zheng to win in straight sets: 4/6
