Potapova Seeks Second Win in Paris

Anastasia Potapova’s stock is rising. The Rusian is a former junior No. 1 and the winner of the 2016 Wimbledon girl’s singles title. But it has taken Potapova a while to rediscover her old winning habits.

After a great breakout season in 2022 which included a maiden WTA title in Istanbul, the 22-year-old is now an established top 30 player and she is one the dangerous floaters in the draw.

It’s the first time she is seeded at a Grand Slam and will play in the main draw of the French Open for just the third time in her career. Potapova’s solitary win in Paris was memorable.

In 2019, Potapova who was 18 at the time, shocked then world No. 5 Angelique Kerber in straight sets. However, her campaign was shortlived as she was thrashed by eventual finalist Marketa Vondrousova in the next round.

Now though, she comes to Paris at a career-high ranking and with a wealth of experience. Potapova is 20-11 in 2023 and collected her second title in Linz. Her 5-3 record on clay includes back-to-back top-10 wins in Stuttgart where she defeated Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia.

Townsend Beats Timofeeva to Qualify

Taylor Townsend believes she is still on her comeback trail, but it’s been a year since she returned from maternity leave.

Towsend has put together a fine clay-court season at all levels. She turned heads in Rome where she qualified for the event and stunned compatriot Jessica Pegula en route to the third round.

A week later, Townsend reached her first final of the season at the WTA 125K in Florence, losing to Jasmine Paolini. But that defeat did not in any way affect her mood in the French Open qualifying draw where Townsend was a red-hot favorite to punch her ticket in the main draw.

And the American lefty did so, overcoming her toughest hurdle in the second round against Kaja Juvan before knocking off Maria Timofeeva in the final round.

Townsend has been as far as the third round at the clay slam back in 2014. But she hasn’t won a main draw match there since 2018. Can she upset Russia’s Anastasia Potapova?
