Griekspoor Struggling on Clay

Tallon Griekspoor was in fantastic form in the first quarter of the year, but clay has slowed his progress.

The Dutchman, who won his maiden ATP title at the Maharashtra Open by beating Benjamin Bonzi in the final, is 15-9 overall this season, but on clay, he is 2-4 in 2023.

The two wins came in the first round in Marrakech and the opening round in Geneva. However, he withdrew before the second round meeting with Nicolas Jarry.

How well he recovers from his injury concern will be a thing to see as he gets ready to take part in his second French Open. Lats year on his debut, the 26-year-old had won his first round match but he lost in the second round.

While Griekspoor has done well on clay at the Challenger level, winning 9 of his 11 Challenger titles on the surface, he is yet to deliver at the tour level. Can he impress at the French Open?

Martinez Comes Through Qualifiers

He was ranked no. 40 in May last year but has seen a steady decline since then.

Currently ranked no. 135, Pedro Martinez will be desperate to climb back the rankings and the three wins in the qualifying rounds that earned him a place in the main draw of the French Open for the fifth time would have certainly boosted his confidence.

In the qualifiers, Martinez knocked out Kimmer Coppejans 6-3, 6-1 in the first round before ousting local hope Dan Added 7-6, 6-2. In the final qualifying round, Martinez found himself a set down against Facundo Bagnis but he bounced back to oust the Argentinian2-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Martinez, who plays his best tennis on clay, won his maiden ATP title on clay in Chile last year. He has also reached one more ATP final and that was also on clay in Kitzbuhel in 2021.

The 26-year-old is 4-11 overall at the tour level this year, which includes a 1-7 record on clay. So things don’t seem too encouraging for the Spaniard. But a run to the quarterfinals in the Oeiras Challenger followed by the three qualifying round wins at the French Open, means he is 5-1 from his last six matches. That should help him going into the first round of the French Open.

Griekspoor v Martinez  Prediction and Tip

Martinez has been in good form recently. He has produced better results on the surface at the senior level than the Dutchman and that experience will give him a slight edge over Griekspoor. Expect more than three sets in the match with the Spaniard progressing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Martinez to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6
