Mertens in Decent Form

Elise Mertens of Belgium has experienced a moderately ordinary year, but she has some momentum to her game.

With a record of 15 wins and 11 losses, her achievements in reaching the round of 16 in Madrid and Miami, along with a semifinal match in Monterrey, have provided solid support to her performance.

Mertens last featured in Rome, where she lost to Anna Kalinskaya in round one. She did, however, move on to win her 17th doubles title – this one with Storm Hunter – in the Italian Open Doubles.

Elise has always been a brilliant doubles player – she is currently World No. 6 (and a former #1). Whereas, on the singles side, she has been decent by her standards. Her record is not as blazing as the top 10 players, but it is impressive nonetheless.

Given her singles draw in Paris, Mertens should do well to reach the mid-rounds in singles – after which it becomes a big ask. On the doubles map, this is one title that is keeping her from achieving a Career Slam.

Hruncakova Favoured by Luck

Viktoria Hruncakova, age 25, started as a qualifier over the weekend and made it to the last of the three matches. She lost that to Sara Bejlek – but thanks to the lucky loser rule, she now has another chance to prove herself.

This is her first main-draw appearance in Paris since 2020, with her best result coming in the 2019 edition when she reached round three.

Viktoria is ranked #136 in the singles ranking with a record of 16-15. While this may indicate some traction, a good chunk of these results have come in ITF events.

Among Hruncakova’s highlights of the year are her runner-up feat in ITF Tallinn and the doubles title from Linz (her first WTA doubles final since 2021). It is also worth considering that she arrived for the Roland Garros on the back of a five-match losing streak.
