Jeanjean Wins Marathon Against Birrell

The first-round match between Leolia Jeanjean and Kimberly Birrell was a battle of wild cards and very few could have predicted the drama that unfolded on Court 14.

And it was Leolia Jeanjean who emerged victorious in a three-hour 10-minute dogfight to reach the second round of the French Open for the second straight year.

Jeanjean won 6-4 6-7 6-3 after overcoming the agony of missing five match points in the second set which lasted 80 minutes.

And considering that her back was against the wall in that third set, needing to recover from going a break down twice, it has to be one the most resilient comebacks from the Frenchwoman who could have easily imploded.

Jeanjean would squander a sixth match point at 5-3 up on her opponent’s serve, but she cooly served for her place in the second round at 5-4 in the decider.

Avanesyan Stuns 12th Seed Bencic

Belinda Bencic’s lack of playing time in the lead-up to Roland Garros proved detrimental as the Swiss became the second high-profile seed to exit the year’s second Major.

Bencic was beaten 6-3 2-6 6-4 by Russian lucky loser Elina Avanesyan in her first match since the start of April. She had skipped the Madrid and Rome WTA 1000 events in order to recover from a hip injury.

But even though Bencic moved well in the match and even took a 4-2 lead deep in the third set. But just when it appeared that she had the match under control, she had a tough time closing it out as the errors started to creep into her game.

Avanesyan clawed four straight games to complete the comeback and earned her first main draw win at Grand Slam level in just her second-ever appearance.

We’ll now have a wild card taking on a lucky loser for a spot in the third round.

Jeanjean v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

This is a massive opportunity for both players. And while Jeanjean will get the home crowd cheering her every step of the way, Avanesyan looked more assured in taking down a seed which is no mean feat, and has managed her nerves better than the French wild card. Expecting three sets here, with Avanesyan taking it.
