Lesia Tsurenko v Lauren Davis Head to Head

Lesia Tsurenko leads Lauren Davis 1-0 in their head-to-head. She won that match on hard courts at the Mexican Open in 2018.

Tsurenko Accounts for Krejcikova Upset

For the second straight year, Barbora Krejcikova was eliminated in the first-round stage at the French Open.

This time, it was Lesia Tsurenko’s turn to inflict an early exit towards the 2021 champion. Tsurenko who was also celebrating her 34th birthday advanced to the second round in Paris for the first time since 2019.

It was an afternoon where Krejcikova struggled to control her shots. Nor did she have the authority over baseline exchanges even with her expertise on the surface.

Tsurenko was sharp from the off, breaking Krejcikova to take a 3-1 lead, and a few games later broke again to take the first set in a comprehensive fashion.

Having failed to put pressure on the Tsurenko serve in the first set, Krejcikova was aggressive at the start of the second set. She conjured her first break point of the match and took it. A couple of games later, Krejcikova had the insurance of a double break.

But what transpired was perplexing as the Czech committed 22 unforced errors to give Tsurenko a route back into the set. The Ukranian averted danger and leveled for 4-all. And just like the first set, Tsurenko broke right at the very end to complete the upset.

Davis Advances Past Lin

Fresh from a Strasbourg semifinal appearance, Lauren Davis clinched an opening win over Zhu Lin in a match featuring two unseeded players. Davis was 3/10 to win after hitting form at the right time. Zhu Lin, meanwhile, had lost four in a row and only played one match on clay coming to the French Open.

And the formbook prevailed here as the American won 6-3 6-3 in 85 minutes to reach the second round for the first time in four seasons.

The match itself was hardly a spectacle, with six breaks in the first set alone, Davis accounting for three of them to win the set 6-3.

The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first. The two players exchanged service breaks twice up until Davis went 4-3 up. She broke Lin’s resistance crucially to lead 5-3 and held in her next service game.

Tsurenko v Davis Prediction and Tip

Davis’ serve is one of the weakest on tour and Zhu Lin managed to break her four times. If she conjures up similar numbers, especially on her second serve, she is unlikely to get away with it against a more experienced player on the dirt than the Chinese. Tsurenko looks a solid pick outright.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tsurenko to win: 8/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tsurenko to win in straight sets: 7/5
