Dimitrov Eases Past Altmaier

Grigor Dimitrov equalled his previous best at Roland Garros as the Bulgarian reached the round of 16 with an easy victory over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the third round on Saturday.

Dimitrov, who is making his 13th appearance in the tournament, had reached the round of 16 in 2020.

He matched that achievement with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 drubbing of the world no. 79 Altmaier on Saturday. The 28th seed saved 5 of 7 break points and converted 7 of 11 to seal the contest in two hours and six minutes.

The win is Dimitrov’s sixth in his last seven matches. His only defeat in those matches came in the final of the Geneva Open, just before the start of the tournament.

He may have lost that final to Nicolas Jarry, but a first final in five years would have certainly bolstered his confidence. And that showed in his first three victories at Roland Garros, winning all three in straight sets.

Dimitrov defeated Timofey Skatov 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 in round one and then he ousted Emil Ruuuvuori 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 in round 2.

Can the three-time major semifinalist reach his maiden quarterfinal at Roland Garros on Monday?
