Beatriz Haddad Maia v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

Haddad Maia Overcomes Opening Loss to Edge Out Alexandrova

The bookmakers did not have a sure-shot pre-match winner here and the match turned out to be exactly like that till the very end.

It took two hours and 51 minutes to break the deadlock between the two players and it was Haddad Maia who managed to scrape past Ekaterina Alexandrova 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to make it to the fourth round of this competition. The Brazilian’s previous best showing at the French Open was a second round appearance last season.

There were a total of 15 breaks of serves in the match but what stood out was Alexandrova’s 67 unforced errors. 27 of them came in the third set and while Haddad Maia hit just five winners in that set, it was that stat that made all the difference between the two.

Haddad Maia could have won even more comfortably in the final set after taking a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serves but Alexandrova came back to level things out and then go 5-4 up. She had a match-point on Haddad Maia’s serve, who first saved that, broke her Russian opponent again and then clinched it off her first match-point.

She will be in with a solid chance to make the last eight.

Sorribes Tormo Benefits from Rybakina Withdrawal

Elena Rybakina was a pre-tournament favourite who could have realistically given both, Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka a run for their money.

In the end, her tournament ended before it reached those stages though as the Kazakh was forced to withdraw from the French Open because of an illness that she caught at the end of the second round. She remarked, “So if I cannot breathe, there is no chance I can even run and try to compete. So I think that’s it.”

What that meant was that the former world number 32 Sorribes Tormo, who has fallen astray on the WTA Rankings has now got her first chance to feature in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.

She has had a four-day break between matches too, which would have given her a good chance to think about her chances. Having defeated Clara Burel and Petra Martic in straight sets in the previous rounds, Sorribes Tormo will now hope she can give Haddad Maia a fight.
