Sonego Crushes Berrettini on His Return

Matteo Berrettini has a stunning record on grass but even that couldn’t prevent him from getting crushed by Sonego in their opening round encounter in Stuttgart.

In evidence was a player who was clearly lacking in fluidity on court and Sonego took full toll of that as he raced off to a 6-1, 6-2 win in a mere 71 minutes.

Sonego did face six break-points in the encounter but saved every single one of them, even as he broke his opponent four times – twice apiece in the two sets.

This followed a series of decent results for Sonego on clay where he reached the third round at the Italian Open and then followed it up with a fourth round appearance at the French Open.

The question now is if Sonego can emulate his last season’s performance in this very tournament where he had beaten Benoit Paire and Jan-Lennard Struff on his way to the quarterfinal where he had lost to Berrettini.

O’Connell Has No Worries against Altmaier

Daniel Altmaier wasn’t quite the favourite coming into his opener here but then again he wasn’t too far behind either. The way O’Connell played, however, it looked like there was a huge gap in the pedigree of the two on grass.

In the end, O’Connell was on court for a mere 56 minutes in which he registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over his German opponent to win his first match ever in Stuttgart.

Such was the dominance of O’Connell in the encounter that there were a total of four break-points, all of which went to the Aussie and he broke his opponent every single time. In turn he won 21 of his 23 first serve points and lost a total of only seven points in the entire match.

Things could get a lot tougher against Sonego, who has done well on grass in the past.

Sonego v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a gripping contest with not much in it between the two players on this surface. The 41st-ranked Sonego does hold the edge but we doubt it would be as straightforward as what the odds suggest.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sonego to win: 9/20
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
